Weekly jobless claims expected at 215K increased to 229K and up from 225K the week prior to a three-week high. Continuing claims, which are seen as a gauge of outstanding unemployment in the US, rose 24,000 to 1,795,000, slightly above expectations of 1,780,000. May jobs were plentiful, now a little pull back but the wider picture is still positive.
May PPI +1.1% month/month on forecasts of +0.7% but April month/month revised lower, from 1.4% to 1.1%. Prices of goods increased 2.8%, following a 1.9% jump in April, with over half of advance attributable to a 23.4% increase in gasoline. Year/year overall PPI +6.5% against estimates of +6.4% and +6.0% in April. Excluding food and energy (core) month/month +0.4% as expected, year/year expected at +5.4% reported 4.9% and down from 5.2% in April.
The two reports hit at 8:30 am ET, there wasn’t any noticeable reaction in the markets.
At 1 pm Treasury will sell $22B of 30 year bonds.
Focus on the economic data is leading markets presently. The 10 year note trading between 4.57% and 4.51%.
