This week has key data to digest, the headliners are the January employment repot on Wednesday and Friday’s January inflation data. Other data includes December retail sales, Q4 2025 employment cost index, December import and export prices, and weekly jobless claims.
Last Friday US stock indexes exploded to record highs and one of the biggest moves in the DJIA over the last year, increasing 1,027 points, this morning the index as well as NASDAQ and S&P traded quietly.
The Fed remains concerned about the employment sector as well as inflation. Last week the job outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas reported employers announced 108,435 job cuts in January, an increase of 118% from the 49,795 cuts announced in the same month last year. It is up 205% from the 35,553 job cuts announced in December, the largest monthly drop since 2009 and the lowest January on record.
The idea of a rate cut at next month’s FOMC meeting had been taken off the table, but its back for the moment. Employment and inflation this week are keys to sustain the ever-volatile guesses on rate cuts. Keep in mind, before the FOMC meeting on March 18th there will be another employment report and another inflation release making any forecasts suspect.
There isn’t any scheduled economic data today.
